Still lot's of stuff to fix. But I'm really satisfied with the project for I managed to take under control dynamics which were tricky... and the whole idea worked out as I planned.
The knife looks good – but should reflect the blood
Lighting is good – there should be a little less contrast between key and fill – the cam left side of the clown is too blown out
The texture on the body of the clown could use some imperfections
A fantastic job in general! :) You saw your idea from conception to final product – which is awesome, just make sure you highlight this on your blog and in your reel.
Compositing:
Excellent work!
Colors are a bit too saturated for the plate – could be a bit more washed out to match, darks a bit brighter and colors less saturated.
Focus and depth of field needs a lot of work and subtle attention – can be done in comp
Adding a subtle drop shadow from the puppet to the arm/wrist would help a lot and be easily done in comp
Puppet/knife could be slightly blurrier - check the grain too
Tracking:
Excellent job tracking the wrist
Knife and blood tracking are loose – can be cleaned up in comp with a lock down
Laurence nailed all the points, nothing for me to add. Work on cleaning up this shot, it will be a nice demo reel piece. Perhaps... I would finish with a different pose for the clown. Something that would finish the shot on a stronger, more entertaining note. Off of top of my head, clown starts laughing historically and turning to camera, turning around and sneering at the audience or at first crying/sobbing and then laughing, singing. Your call.
@Laurence Thank you, I'll be working on that stuff. I also will update blog on this weekend to show all the steps I've done. When I was making cape texture - totally forgot about imperfections, thank you! I will probably need your advise later on on locking down the knife though =)
@Dado Thank you Dado. I actually did have some problems figuring out what the clown should do in the end, and I like your idea... moreover I remember Leo suggested me similar idea with clown laughing in the end. Thank you for the input, I will change the animation in the end during the break!
I love your piece, it works well in all the areas. There are a few things I would change to make this a demo piece as you are so close!
Laurence nailed lots of stuff.
- Watch your blacks on the clown they seem much darker than your bg plate. - As he moves I think there could be more motion blur, it seems he is a bit to clear in fast movement giving the cg away. - The knife turned out great, although as stated before its too sharp. - The blood needs lots of tracking love. I would add some blood on the knife blade as well, and perhaps some blood splatter on the screen (little tiny ones would be great!). - When the clown is done he looks a bit too subtle a little (ha!, HA!) or some sort of gotcha reaction would be nice. - His hair is a bit too orange, taking some overall saturation would be great.
Over all fantastic job and I am happy to see how this turned out.
